BEFORE JOINING A RECOVERY HOME, CONSIDER TREATMENT

The key to long term success in recovery is beginning with a solid treatment program. It is critical that you develop a solid foundation from which you can start working to get better, and proper treatment is the only way to build that foundation. Simply detoxing to break the addiction cycle cannot substitute for a longer term treatment plan, and by just detoxing and then installing yourself in a sober living you are putting yourself at a disadvantage right out of the gate.

In some cases, quitting drinking or withdrawing from drugs can endanger your life if done so without proper medical care and supervision. You may already know this, but quitting drinking alcohol (depending on the amount one drinks) kills far more people each year than drug withdrawal. Additionally a good treatment center can medicate you to the degree you will be a lot more "comfortable" in withdrawal than you would on your own. Quitting whatever your addiction may be, alcohol or drugs, is a huge, laudable decision that can lead to a vastly happier life. Just do it right - and "right" implies with medical care and supervision by real doctors, not just counselors or social workers. Make certain when calling a treatment center that you confirm they have a qualified medical staff and a physician on call 24/7 for proper medical care.

The more engaged you as an individual can become with a comprehensive treatment program, on the other hand, the better your chances will be that all angles of the clinical, medical, and psychological aspects of your problems can be addressed.

There are too many aspects about recovery to address here. The best idea by far is to call a treatment center and start with an evaluation by a medical professional to see what approach might be best for YOU.
